July Journal (“July Journal,” “we,” “us”) is a writing-adventures app for creative young people at july-journal.com. A new writing prompt arrives as a notification every few days, and the writer answers it on the web. This page explains what we collect and the terms of using the service. Questions? Privacy Policy
What we collect
- Mobile number — used to sign you in (a one-time code by text); prompts and reminders arrive as notifications.
- First name and birthday — to personalize messages and greetings.
- Journal entries and any photos you add — the writing and images you create in the app.
- Basic usage information — such as when you last wrote, to power streaks and reminders.
How we use it
- To deliver your prompts and reminders as notifications.
- To save your entries and photos so you can read them back anytime.
- To personalize encouragement and check-ins (see “Automated messages & AI” below).
- To operate, secure, and improve the service.
Automated messages & AI
Prompts, reminders, and encouragement are sent automatically — there is no person reading everyone’s writing. To tailor these messages, your entries and activity may be processed by an automated AI service. We use this only to generate your personalized nudges and summaries, not to train public models.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for anyone else’s marketing. We use a small number of service providers only to run July Journal:
- SMS delivery (our text-messaging provider) — to send your one-time sign-in codes.
- Cloud storage — to store entries and photos.
- AI provider — to generate personalized messages as described above.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of users.
Children’s privacy
July Journal is designed for young writers, generally with a parent’s or guardian’s involvement. If you are a parent and would like to review or delete your child’s information, contact us at hello@july-journal.com and we will take care of it.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can ask us to delete your entries and account at any time by emailing hello@july-journal.com.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no online service can be guaranteed perfectly secure.
SMS / Text Messaging
We use text messaging only to verify your device at sign-in. When you provide your mobile number, we send a one-time verification code by text. We do not send recurring, promotional, or marketing texts — writing prompts arrive as web-push notifications, not text messages.
- What we send: a single one-time passcode when you sign in.
- Cost: message and data rates may apply.
- Your number stays private: we never sell it or share it with third parties for marketing. It is used only to sign you in and operate July Journal.
- Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
Terms of Service
Using July Journal
By signing up, you agree to these terms. To use the service you need a mobile number that can receive texts. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you should have a parent’s or guardian’s permission.
Your writing is yours
You own everything you write and any photos you add. You grant us permission to store and display that content back to you as part of running the service. We don’t claim ownership of your work and we don’t publish it publicly.
Be kind and lawful
Please use July Journal for your own creative writing. Don’t use it to store or share anything illegal, or to harass or harm anyone. We may suspend accounts that misuse the service.
The service is provided “as is”
We work hard to keep July Journal running, but we provide it “as is,” without warranties of any kind. We may change, pause, or discontinue features at any time. To the fullest extent allowed by law, July Journal is not liable for any indirect or incidental damages arising from your use of the service.
Changes to these terms
We may update this page from time to time. The “last updated” date above reflects the current version, and continued use of July Journal means you accept the latest terms.
